Windows 10 end of support – what this means.
When Windows 10 reaches its end of support on October 14, 2025 Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10.
Your PC will still work, but Microsoft recommend moving to Windows 11 which offers a modern and efficient experience designed to meet current demands for heightened security.
What if your computer won’t run Windows 11
Well, you could just continue using Windows 10 on your computer. It won’t just stop working after October 14, 2025.
There are risks which you should understand though.
Without security updates, your computer becomes more vulnerable to malware and cyberattacks. You’ll need to keep up-to-date antivirus software running on your computer to help mitigate some risks. You might also want to reduce online activities to minimize exposure to potential threats.
Do I need to buy a new computer then?
Not necessarily.
Many desktop computers may struggle to upgrade to Windows 11 due to hardware limitations. However, by replacing essential components such as the motherboard, processor, and memory, you can significantly extend the lifespan of your device and enable a smooth transition to the latest operating system. This approach not only saves you money but also contributes to a more sustainable future by preventing perfectly functional hardware from ending up in landfills.
If you have a laptop that won’t upgrade to Windows 11, you cannot generally update the hardware. This doesn’t have to mean the end for your laptop.
Are there other options?
Windows isn’t the only operating system…
It might have the biggest market share but there are other operating systems that could be installed on your desktop or laptop computer.
